Location
The institute is located in Griftu Centre, Wajir West Constituency, Wajir County, 70km due North from Wajir town along the Wajir-Moyale road. The coordinates for the exact location of the institute are as follows: 2000’12.29” N, 390 45’09.80” E. (2.00341389, 39.752222)
Institute Land
The institute has four parcels of land. These are;
Seven acres at the main campus.
Wetland plot on a seasonal river.
One-acre demonstration farm near the wetland.
Five thousand hectares farm.
Establishment of the institute
Livestock Training Institute, Wajir was incepted on 26th September 2016 through an executive order. It resulted from the upgrading of the former Griftu Pastoral Training Centre (GPTC) that was started in 1968 as a project of Kenya Livestock Development Programme Phase 1 (KLDP 1). LTI admitted its first batch of 16 students in 2016 to undertake a four-semester certificate course in Animal Health and Range Management.
To train middle level professionals in Animal Health and Range Management; Leather Technology; Environment and Disaster Management; and value addition of livestock and livestock products as well as offer short term trainings to pastoralists.
To be the regional center of excellence for capacity building of middle level professionals and pastoral communities in range resource management
